LOSITO is active in the area of cultural exchange between
Africa and Bremen respectively Salzburg in Austria. LOSITO is an officially recognized
organization working for the public good and for international understanding. It is our
goal to reveal and bring to consciousness the prejudices, clichées and misunderstandings
that form our ideas about Africa and vice versa. At the same time, we’d like to offer
possibilities to work on this process in order to overcome traditional ideas and
persistent prejudices. For this, we use art as a medium, especially painting. |

Thus we travel to different African regions and try to
share the everyday life of the people there as far as possible. Every time we come, we
bring painting utensils and offer the people the possibility to communicate themselves,
their everyday life, their work, problems, celebrations, dreams, wishes and imaginations
right there at their places. For many people it is the first time to experiment with
painting and to express their feelings and thoughts this way. The paintings that emerge
initiate a process of awareness and show problems, that can now become subjects of a
broader discussion. |

With these paintings, that we take back to Bremen, we work
in many different ways. Not only do we exhibit them in art galleries (some of the
paintings satisfy the highest standards of art), but we also go into citizen halls (BGH
Oslebshausen/Bremen, with the topic "Living and working in a Westafrican
village"), youth centres (f.i. youth initiative "Sielwallhaus" in Bremen
with the topic "Generation conflicts in Africa and Germany"), schools (f.i. the
school at Grambker Heerstr./Bremen), and cultural centres as "Westend" in Walle
or "Kino 46" (both Bremen). Throughout these activities we set up painting
workshops that give the visitors the opportunity to give a personal answer to the
paintings they saw, by brush, colour, and paper. Of course, we take those paintings back
to Africa, where we close the circle of the cultural exchange. Thus, already many painting
friendships developped between the people at their places, across the continents. |
